Luton Central Mosque is being honoured as part of town’s heritage

On Sunday, 19 September the masjid was honoured with a Blue Plaque to celebrate it’s significance as a heritage in Luton.

At the time of its official opening in 1982, Luton Central Mosque was one of the first purpose-built mosques in Britain, and the biggest in modern Europe. Established in response to the town’s growing Muslim population, its construction was financed by generous Lutonians , with men donating their entire wage packets – and women their gold jewellery – to support the build. Today, its striking dome and minaret are synonymous with Luton’s skyline.

After almost 40 years on the site, Luton Central Mosque retains its title as one of the UK’s largest purpose-built masjids and the building was immortalised on the silver screen when it featured in the 2019 critically acclaimed film, Blinded by the Light.

Discover Luton’s hidden history is a plan of Luton’s Heritage Forum- it aims to protect and preserve the town’s most valued heritage assets.
