Luton : Free entertainment in Wardown Park as Queen’s Baton Relay visits Luton: Cropped version for press release A5 Queen’s Baton Relay
Luton Council is encouraging communities to get together with friends and family and bring a picnic down to Wardown Park on Friday 8 July as the Queen’s Baton Relay briefly passes through the town.
The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay is visiting all 72 nations and territories of the Commonwealth in the lead up to the Games this summer and it will visit Luton on 8 July.
To mark the occasion, a free community celebration will take place in Wardown Park from 4-6pm, where the baton will arrive and make its way around the park during the time.
Entertainment will be provided along the route, which will progress around the park from the bandstand, around the river, past the playground, across the bridge and back to the bandstand where further entertainment will take place.
While details are still being finalised, entertainment will include dancing and singing, schools and community bands and various cultural displays that celebrate Luton’s diversity.
Cllr Hazel Simmons, Leader of Luton Council, said: “We are very much looking forward to the Queen’s Baton Relay coming to town. While this will just be a short visit, we think it would make for a perfect opportunity for families and friends to get together and bring a picnic down to our wonderful Wardown Park on what will hopefully be a warm summer’s afternoon and early evening.
“While the event will be low key, people will be able to enjoy each other’s company in a nice atmosphere while watching some local entertainment in the park that will reflect the diversity, culture, and heritage of our town.”
